Cape Town: Boardwalk maintenance at Maclear's Beacon
South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that boardwalk maintenance currently underway at Maclear's Beacon on top of Table Mountain in the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town. The maintenance work is expected to be finished on 28 February 2023. SANParks requests visitors to exercise caution when approaching this area.
Maclear’s Beacon lies on the North-East side of the mountain plateau of Table Mountain, and offers fantastic views of Cape Town's CBD, the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island below. It was built by Astronomer Sir Thomas Maclear in 1865 at approximately 1,087 meters above sea level – which is Table Mountain's highest point. The beacon in the form of a pile of rocks was established as a triangulation station to help measure the curvature of the earth.
