South Africa: Seasonal rainfall & temperature outlook (February 2023 - April 2023)
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has published its Seasonal Climate Watch report covering the period from February 2023 to April 2023. Based on the latest seasonal outlook, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is presently in a La Niña phase, with forecasts suggesting a transition to a neutral phase by autumn (March 2023 to May 2023). As long as ENSO remains in a La Niña phase, the likelihood of above-average rainfall over the summer rainfall areas remains high for late summer and early autumn.
The multi-model rainfall forecast indicates that most parts of South Africa are expected to receive above-average rainfall for all predicted seasons. Furthermore, minimum and maximum temperatures are anticipated to be mainly above-average throughout the country during the forecast period.
