South Africa: Tourist arrivals jump 102,5% in the first quarter of 2023
The South African Department of Tourism has published its latest tourism data for the first quarter of 2023. According to the statistics, South Africa had 2.1 million international visitors between January 2023 and March 2023. This is a significant 102.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022. However, it is still 21.5% lower than the 2019 levels. The African continent led the way with 1.6 million arrivals between January 2023 and March 2023, followed by 387 000 visitors from Europe and 104 000 visitors from the Americas.
The foreign direct spend in South Africa soared to an astounding R25.3 billion during the first quarter of 2023, marking a 143.9% increase compared to the first three month of 2022. Between January 2019 and March 2019, the foreign direct spend in South Africa was R25.6 billion.
