Nsanje Marka – Bangula rail rehabilitation project
The Nsanje Marka – Bangula rail rehabilitation project located in the Southern region, is making strides under the execution of China Railway 20th Bureau Group Corporation Limited with CIVILIA as the consultant. This initiative falls under the oversight of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, specifically the Department of Railway Services in Malawi.
Originally part of Malawi’s 2017 master transport plan, this project aims to enhance the rail infrastructure to facilitate more efficient cargo transport. Significant upgrades include increasing the axle load capacity from 15 tons to 20 tons and boosting train speeds by 70 km/hr. Initiated in May 2022, the project was slated for completion by 17th November 2023. However, it has faced several hurdles that necessitated extending the deadline to 26th April 2024. To date, progress has been limited to 23% completion, with substantial work pending beyond the first 14 km. Challenges include adverse site conditions, fuel and foreign exchange issues, delayed government payments to the contractor, and market fluctuations.
Furthermore, the project encompasses critical enhancements to the Nyachipenda Bridge, a vital component of the railway network. In response to flood risks, amplified by Cyclone Freddy, the bridge is being elevated. Originally spanning between 70 and 90 km, it now extends to 204 km. The upgraded bridge is expected to support a significant increase in traffic, with a capacity to handle 6 million tons of cargo once operational.
This project represents a pivotal development in Malawi’s transportation infrastructure, aiming to significantly reduce transport costs and increase logistical efficiency upon completion.
