Road between WDH Airport and town renamed after former president
The Namibian Roads Authority (RA) has renamed the B9 highway between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH). The road, wich is currently under construction, will be known as Dr Hage Geingob Freeway.
Hage Gottfried Geingob (1941 – 2024) was a Namibian politician who served as the third president of Namibia. He was the first Prime Minister of the country from 1990 to 2002, and served as prime minister again from 2012 to 2015. In November 2014, Geingob was elected president of Namibia. He was sworn in as president on 21 March 2015. In November 2019 Geingob was reelected. He passed away in February 2024.
The B9/Dr. Hage Geingob Freeway is a connection Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH), located about 50 km east of Namibia's capital. Construction of the 45-km long dual carriageway freeway started in 2016 on the first phase of the freeway, as a southern bypass of Windhoek. A second construction phase commenced in 2019, while the third phase officially started in 2022. The entire project is expected to be completed by November 2024. By then, the travel time from Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) to the Windhoek's CBD will be shortened from the current 45 minutes to 25 minutes.
