Disney Cruise Line orders four new cruise ships from Meyer Werft
Disney Cruise Line has confirmed an order with German shipyard Meyer Werft for four new cruise ships, due for delivery between 2027 and 2031.
The new vessels will join its current fleet of five and four on order, bringing the total fleet count to 13 ships when all have been delivered. The announcement was made during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, where the company said that the ship names, designs, and itineraries were still in development.
The Disney Magic and Wonder, the line’s two initial newbuilds, joined the fleet in 1998 and 1999, respectively, and were built at Fincantieri in Italy. Subsequent ships were all built at Meyer Werft in Germany, and the company’s upcoming orderbook is being handled by the German yard. The line’s most recent new cruise ship, the 2,500-guest Disney Wish, launched in 2022, while Disney Treasure is next, due for delivery later this year.
“We are very happy to continue our partnership with Disney Cruise Line and build four additional outstanding ships over the next seven years. We now have eight ships for Disney Cruise Line in our order book which reflects the trust in our capabilities and hard work of our team”, said Bernard Meyer, Chairman of Meyer Werft. Our Disney cruise ships are the true ambassadors for our brands and beloved by families the world over,” added Thomas Mazloum, President, New Experiences Portfolio and Disney Signature Experiences. “As we embark on this ambitious and unprecedented expansion for Disney Cruise Line, we are delighted to work with Meyer Werft once again.”
Disney Cruise Line has a longstanding relationship with the shipyard going back to Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, which were delivered in 2010 and 2012. In 2022, the first Wish-Class cruise ship Disney Wish was handed over to Disney Cruise Line. The two sister ships Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny are currently under construction in Papenburg and will be delivered in 2024 and 2025.
In addition to these vessels, Disney Cruise Line is also finishing the build of Disney Adventure, the former Global Dream of Genting Hong Kong, which liquidated following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Disney Cruise Line acquired the half-built ship and will deploy her in Singapore once delivered in 2025. She will be the largest cruise ship in the Disney fleet, if the four newbuilds are not larger in design once additional details are announced.
