Plateau State Hosts Inaugural Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival
The Plateau State government proudly organized the inaugural State Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival, which took place from Friday, November 29 to Sunday, December 1, 2024. The event attracted large crowds to the renowned Ten Commandments Prayer Altar in Doi, Du District, located within the Jos South local government area.
One of the highlights of the festival was a remarkable statement made by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who revealed details about former President Olusegun Obasanjo's release from detention. Speaking on the first day of the event, General Gowon, who served as the Special Guest of Honour, shared that he had intervened with the late Gen. Sani Abacha to prevent Obasanjo’s execution over an alleged coup plot in 1995. "I wrote a letter to Abacha, pleading with him that God made him a leader to do good and not evil. I sent my wife with the letter in the middle of the night to Abacha in Abuja, asking him to reconsider. I'm grateful that soon after, things changed," Gowon recounted. "Not only did Obasanjo leave prison, but he also became our President in 1999. This is a testament to the power of prayer and sincere intentions.
I am delighted that today, both Obasanjo and I are here to celebrate the unity of Plateau." General Gowon acknowledged the security challenges faced by Plateau and emphasized that the carol festival provided an excellent opportunity for communal engagement. He commended Governor Mutfwang for his various initiatives aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence among the populace. In response to Gowon’s revelations, Obasanjo expressed his gratitude on the second day of the event, admitting that he was unaware of the pivotal role Gowon played in his release. "I must thank you, my boss. Yesterday, you shared something that was unknown to me. When I was released from prison, I traveled the world to thank friends who prayed for my release. I did not know that you had personally written a letter on my behalf until you mentioned it yesterday. I truly appreciate that." Obasanjo praised the significance of the festival and assured attendees that even if he were not invited to the 2025 edition, he would attend if God permits, commending Governor Mutfwang for initiating the celebration.
As the citizens continue to bask in the joy of the event, additional tourism-oriented activities such as mini-trade fairs, fashion shows, and year-end festivals are emerging to the delight of the community. The Governor has also enhanced the Jos Wildlife Park to make it more inviting for visitors. Ultimately, the citizens of Plateau are encouraged to embrace peace and enjoy the numerous activities planned for the festive season, showing appreciation for Governor Mutfwang's efforts in fostering unity and celebration.
