Launch of Air Congo Launch of Air Congo

Ethiopian Airlines, recognized as Africa's largest aviation group and a prestigious SKYTRAX certified Four Star Global Airline, is thrilled to announce its collaboration with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to establish a new airline, Air Congo. Under this partnership, the DRC government will hold a 51% majority stake in the airline, while Ethiopian Airlines will maintain a 49% share and take charge of its management.

Mesfin Tasew, the Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized the significance of launching Air Congo as a pivotal move in the airline's strategic plan to work alongside African governments. He highlighted that this partnership is designed to enhance air transport throughout the continent. “The establishment of Air Congo will greatly improve connectivity for the DRC and Central Africa, facilitating investment, trade, and tourism, which are essential for the socio-economic development of the region,” he stated. Tasew also expressed his gratitude to the DRC government, all involved stakeholders, and his dedicated colleagues for their commitment and collaboration in making this initiative a reality.

Air Congo will commence operations with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, focusing on domestic routes and initially serving seven airports across the DRC. To ensure the effective functioning of the airline, key technical agreements have been established between Ethiopian Airlines and the DRC government. These agreements cover various aspects, including aircraft leasing, comprehensive technical support, and systems support, which are crucial for the airline's successful operation.

Moreover, Ethiopian Airlines is committed to fostering local talent by providing training for Congolese nationals. This training will encompass a range of positions, including pilots, cabin crew, sales and service personnel, and technicians, thereby contributing to the development of human capital within the DRC's aviation sector. In summary, the partnership between Ethiopian Airlines and the DRC government to launch Air Congo represents a significant advancement in enhancing regional air connectivity and fostering economic growth. This initiative not only aims to improve travel options within the DRC but also to stimulate investment and tourism, ultimately benefiting the broader Central African region.
