Kenya's New eTA Policy: Boosting Regional Travel for Most African Nations
Kenya has recently unveiled a significant change in its travel protocols by granting Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) exemptions to all African countries, with the exception of Somalia and Libya. This move, approved by President William Ruto's Cabinet, comes amid ongoing security concerns related to these two nations.
The primary goal of this initiative is to foster regional integration and simplify travel across the continent. According to the Cabinet Office, this policy aims to facilitate easier access for African visitors, representing a progressive step in enhancing inter-African mobility.
Under the new regulations, most African visitors will be granted a two-month stay in Kenya. Additionally, nationals from the East African Community (EAC) will benefit from an extended six-month stay as a continuation of the EAC’s free movement protocols, which aim to strengthen regional ties and cooperation.
The Department of Immigration is set to introduce an expedited processing option for eTA applications, allowing travelers to receive their approvals almost instantly. This new feature promises to enhance efficiency, with a processing time capped at 72 hours, depending on operational capacity. To further bolster security and streamline passenger management, the Cabinet announced the implementation of an Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record system. In addition to these measures, the Cabinet has tasked Cabinet Secretaries from various departments, including National Treasury, Transport, Interior, and Tourism, to conduct a thorough review and propose guidelines aimed at enhancing the traveler experience at all Kenyan airports.
