Port Harcourt Airport Revamp: Aiming for World-Class Standards Port Harcourt Airport Revamp: Aiming for World-Class Standards

The Rivers State Government has embarked on an ambitious project to transform Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA) into a modern travel hub, enhancing both operational efficiency and passenger experience. This initiative is set to position PHIA as a key gateway in Nigeria’s South-South region, aligning with international aviation standards.

Key upgrades include the expansion of the airport’s access road, rehabilitation of internal roads, and the construction of a dedicated drop-off zone at the Domestic Terminal Zone (DTZ). These improvements aim to streamline passenger flow and create a more welcoming environment for travelers. Additionally, the terminal building’s road infrastructure is undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction to ensure smoother operations for both arrivals and departures.

Further modernization efforts involve the remodeling of the toll gate area and the enhancement of day and overnight car parks, which are nearing completion. These upgrades are being executed with minimal disruption to ongoing airport activities, ensuring a seamless experience for passengers during the construction phase.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reiterated the state government’s commitment to delivering a world-class airport that meets international standards. The project is expected to not only improve safety and efficiency but also boost the economic profile of Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole. By modernizing PHIA, the government aims to attract more airlines, increase passenger traffic, and promote Port Harcourt as a strategic travel hub in the region.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has assured travelers and stakeholders that the upgrades will result in a more efficient, modern, and safer airport. With these developments, PHIA is poised to play a pivotal role in driving regional connectivity and economic growth, reinforcing its importance in Nigeria’s aviation landscape.

As the project progresses, travel agents and industry professionals can anticipate a revitalized PHIA that not only enhances the passenger experience but also strengthens its position as a critical node in Africa’s air travel network.
