IBTM World 2026 Reveals Bold Conference Line-Up in Barcelona: Storytelling, AI and Resilience Lead IBTM World 2026 Reveals Bold Conference Line-Up in Barcelona: Storytelling, AI and Resilience Lead

The global business events industry is preparing for one of its most anticipated gatherings of the year, as IBTM World 2026 has revealed the first major details of its conference programme. Scheduled to unfold from 17 to 19 November at Fira Barcelona, this year's edition promises a fresh approach centred on storytelling, artificial intelligence, creativity, resilience and leadership. For African event professionals seeking global exposure and fresh inspiration, the programme offers timely insights into how the meetings and incentives sector is reshaping itself.

At the heart of this year's agenda lies a pressing question relevant to every corner of the industry, including Africa's fast-growing MICE market: how can event professionals thrive in a sector transforming faster than ever before? To answer this, organisers have introduced a brand-new format called the Skills Exchange, alongside a keynote from bestselling author and celebrated global thinker Will Storr.

Opening day two on the Main Stage, Will Storr will deliver a session titled "The Storytelling Brain: what neuroscience tells us about creating experiences that stick." The talk will unpack why certain experiences linger in memory while others fade away, drawing on the science of emotion and human behaviour. In a conversation with James Kirkham, founder of ICONIC and Podcast StoryCo, Storr will encourage delegates to reconsider how meaningful moments are designed and shared, a message that resonates strongly with African destinations working to differentiate themselves in the global tourism landscape.

Complementing the main programme is the Skills Exchange, a collaborative learning space where delegates move beyond listening to actively applying new ideas. Through formats such as Lunch & Learn, Brain & Brew and Sips & Skills workshops, participants will tackle real industry challenges, network with peers and leave with practical tools they can put to work immediately. This community-driven approach mirrors the growing appetite among African planners for hands-on knowledge sharing rather than lecture-style sessions.

Among the standout workshops is Designing Belonging, guided by Naomi Clare of StoryCraft Lab and Betsy Rives, Workplace Experience Strategist at Google. The session will show how a genuine sense of belonging can be intentionally built into every event. Creativity also gets the spotlight in Structuring Creative Thinking for Better Events, where Ravid Kuperberg of Mindscapes will share the techniques behind campaigns awarded 53 Cannes Lions, proving that creativity is a discipline that can be learned and refined.

Day two turns its focus to resilience, an essential quality for African event managers navigating shifting economies, evolving traveller behaviour and unpredictable global conditions. In the interactive workshop Shift Happens, former military leader Ronnie Robson and defence expert Libby Vallance-Bull will run delegates through real-world scenarios designed to strengthen adaptability and confidence under pressure.

The final day shifts attention to careers and leadership. Lauren Spearman, founder of Careering, will lead a workshop redefining what personal brand truly means beyond social media metrics. Through guided reflection and practical exercises, participants will walk away with a sharper plan for professional growth, a valuable takeaway for African professionals seeking to raise their profile on the international stage.

The wider programme features Main Stage keynotes from visionary thinkers, Future Stage sessions on emerging destinations and event technology, Ignite Start-up showcases, and dedicated AI-focused content including "AI for Events – Demo Day LIVE" delivered in partnership with Boldpush. Live demonstrations will show how artificial intelligence is transforming planning, delivery and measurement.

According to Lucy Dyer, Conference Manager at IBTM World, the redesigned programme aims to foster community, collaboration and a relaxed learning atmosphere. For Africa's travel trade, the Barcelona gathering represents a valuable window into the tools, ideas and partnerships that will define the next chapter of business events across the continent.
