Etihad links Abu Dhabi to five Nigerian cities through Ibom Air tie-up ahead of 2027 launch Etihad links Abu Dhabi to five Nigerian cities through Ibom Air tie-up ahead of 2027 launch

West African connectivity is about to look very different. Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, has signed an interline agreement with Nigeria's Ibom Air, giving passengers a single ticket from Abu Dhabi through to five Nigerian cities. The arrangement takes effect from the moment Etihad's own Lagos and Accra services begin in March 2027.

The practical benefit for anyone handling Gulf and Asian traffic is straightforward. Etihad guests landing in Lagos or Accra will continue on Ibom Air to Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu, with additional links running from Accra to Abuja and from Accra to Uyo. One booking covers the whole journey, and baggage is checked through to the final destination, removing the familiar headache of reclaiming bags, clearing customs and re-checking on a separate domestic ticket.

Two of those cities are genuinely new territory for single-ticket itineraries on Etihad. Uyo and Calabar, both in Nigeria's south, now join Abuja, Port Harcourt and Enugu on the list, opening up corporate travel into the oil and gas belt as well as visiting-friends-and-relatives demand that has historically been poorly served by through-fares.

Etihad's nonstop operation into the region starts next year. Accra will see four flights a week from 24 March 2027, while Lagos moves to a daily service from 23 March 2027. Combined tickets across the two networks go on sale from 3 November 2026, which gives trade partners roughly four months of selling time before departure dates open up.

Arik De, Etihad Airways Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, framed the deal as part of a longer commitment rather than an opportunistic move. "Our ambitions in Africa are long-term, and Nigeria sits at the centre of them," he said. "Ibom Air has built a strong domestic network from its base in Uyo, and partnerships with airlines that know their own markets are how we grow on the continent. Having this in place before our Accra and Lagos flights begin next March means we arrive in the region already connected to the cities beyond them."

That comment about local knowledge is worth dwelling on. Gulf carriers have spent years trying to crack African domestic markets, and the emerging pattern is partnership rather than direct competition. For regional airlines, the prize is access to long-haul feed they could never generate alone.

George Uriesi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, made exactly that point. "This agreement marks a significant milestone in our journey to becoming a truly world-class African regional airline," he said. "It enables international travellers to access the cities we serve through a single booking, enhancing connectivity and convenience. Additionally, it positions Ibom Air as the key domestic and regional connection for Etihad Airways' operations into Nigeria and Ghana from next year. We look forward to welcoming Etihad's guests onboard and showcasing the excellent service that defines the Ibom Air experience."

The strategic read here matters for the wider trade. Etihad is assembling a West African feeder structure before a single one of its own aircraft touches down in Lagos or Accra, which is a notable shift from the older model of launching first and finding partners afterwards. It also signals that Accra is being treated as a genuine regional gateway rather than a secondary stop, given that Ghanaian departures will carry through-fares into Nigerian cities.

For intermediaries across the continent, the medium-term implication is more complex pricing and more competitive options on routes that were once dominated by a handful of carriers. Single-ticket protection also reduces the risk of missed connections falling on the agency, which has long been a quiet cost of selling multi-carrier African itineraries.
