Mauritius Metro Express inaugurated
Last month, the new Metro Express has launched its operations on Mauritius.
In 1964, all railroad facilities had been dismantled on Mauritius island; the railroad was unable to compete with growing indivual traffic. Of course this has changed over the last years and along with increasing demand of public transport and the ongoing discussions about environment protection, the governement had decided to establish a light rail line.
The 13 km north-south route serves nine stops between Immigration Square in Port Louis and Rose Hill. The second phase, due to be completed in 2021, will add another 13 km from Rose Hill to Curepipe with another 10 stops. The project had been funded by the Indian governement. 18 low-floor vehicles are currently beeing operated.
Plans for the future are to connect Curepipe towards the South with the airport and Mahébourg as well as Port Louis with Grand Bay in the North in order to have a network across the island from North to South.
