Algeria relaunches domestic flights and reforms the national airline
In Algeria, the Council of Ministers decided on Sunday, October 4 to reopen domestic airports. The Head of State, who chaired the work, also instructed the revision of Air Algérie's management method and the opening of the market to new local companies.
Domestic flights could resume in Algeria this week. This thanks to the reopening of domestic airports decided on Sunday, October 4, 2020 by the Council of Ministers. An announcement made without further details on the health measures that will frame the resumption of domestic flights. These platforms have been closed since the end of March, as part of the measures to combat the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The government wants to coincide this period of revival of aviation activities with the structural reform of the national flagship. The Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in fact instructed the "revision of the management mode of the company Air Algeria so as to make it competitive internationally, and reduction of the number of its commercial agencies abroad". In its new form, the carrier will be geared towards "opening up new lines, especially to the Americas and Africa" as recommended by the head of state.
At the domestic level, Air Algérie will however have to prepare for the arrival of new competitors. Indeed, the Council of Ministers also prescribed the "creation of special companies in order to ensure the internal air transport service to create an economic dynamic and absorb unemployment. "
Note that Algeria's air, sea and land borders remain closed, as has been the case since the end of March.
