Project in focus: Canopy by Hilton Johannesburg Rosebank
This exciting development represents part of Canopy by Hilton’s drive to grow its presence in both the north and south of the African continent. We find out what to expect from the forthcoming Johannesburg hotel. Located on Jellicoe Avenue, Canopy by Hilton Johannesburg Rosebank will be set amid a leafy upmarket neighbourhood best known for its vibrant arts and cultural scene. The hotel will sit across from the Keyes Art Mile Precinct and within easy reach of the CIRCA modern art gallery.
Reflecting its location, the property will showcase a design concept that connects guests to the artistic fabric of Rosebank. Facilities here will include a rooftop bar, pool and garden area that help bring the neighbourhood into the hotel.
The four-star 180-room hotel is being developed by Svelte Bespoke. Its architectural design is by GHS International Architecture and the interiors are by Tristan Plessis Studio in collaboration with Svelte. Overall, the property will follow Canopy by Hilton’s philosophy of offering a locally inspired stay.
Hilton expands across Africa: The July 2020 announcement of this hotel followed the news that Canopy by Hilton would be opening its first property in North Africa with the launch of Canopy by Hilton Casablanca Les Arenes. Another hotel in Cape Town is also under development.
Hilton now has over 10,000 rooms in the pipeline across Africa – its flagship Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand leads the continent in terms of the number of hotels and guest rooms under development. In 2019, the group reached the milestone of having 100 properties open or under development across Africa.
“The growth of Canopy by Hilton at both ends of the African continent is indicative of what we see as demand from travellers looking for immersive, cultural travel experiences in established destinations,” said Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president of development for Hilton in EMEA. “We’re proud to be building further momentum on the continent and passing the milestone of 10,000 rooms illustrates our long-term confidence in the industry.”
