Silversea christens tenth ship Silver Dawn in Lisbon
Silversea Cruises has christened its third ship in 9 months and the tenth ship to join its fleet at a ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal. Silver Dawn was officially named by her newly named Godmother, Nilou Motamed—an influential food and travel editor, tastemaker, and television personality.
Motamed cut the ribbon to trigger a champagne bottle to smash on the ship’s hull, signalling her comissioning into the Silversea fleet.
Executives from Royal Caribbean Group, Silversea Cruises, and Fincantieri, as well as local dignitaries and guests, were in attendance for the ship’s debut, which included Royal Caribbean Group’s customary bagpipe performance. Silversea Cruises was purchased by Royal Caribbean Group in 2018, and the cruise line’s latest fleet redevelopment and expansion has been largely funded by the cruise company, the second-largest in the world.
Silver Dawn is a third sister ship in a group that includes Silver Muse and Silver Moon, the largest ships ever built for the cruise line at 40,800-gross tons.
Silversea has also expanded its expedition fleet with Silver Origin and has two even larger cruise ships on order, the Silver Nova and an unnamed sister ship, due for delivery in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
“Celebrating the naming of Silver Dawn in Lisbon marked an incredibly proud moment for all involved,” said Jason Liberty, President & CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “I thank and congratulate Roberto Martinoli and our entire team, including Captain Failla and the crew, as well as everyone at Fincantieri, our ship building partners.”
Silver Dawn introduces the cruise line’s new Otium concept, an indulgent new wellness program unique to Silversea, as well as the next iteration of Silversea’s S.A.L.T. culinary program. “An evolution of our unique take on luxury, Silver Dawn is the third Silversea ship to be named in the last nine months,” said Roberto Martinoli, president and CEO, Silversea Cruises. As well as S.A.L.T., our immersive culinary program, the Silver Dawn enriches guests’ travels with Otium, our indulgent new wellness program, which is inspired by the ancient Roman lifestyle,” he added.
“She really is magnificent. I extend my gratitude to Jason Liberty and all involved at Royal Caribbean Group, as well as to the team at Silversea, Fincantieri, and Captain Failla and his crew—our most valuable asset. Moreover, I proudly welcome Nilou Motamed as the Godmother of Silver Dawn.”
Silver Dawn departed on her inaugural voyage on April 1st, sailing from Lisbon to Barcelona. She is scheduled to sail in the Mediterranean until November, when she will cross the Atlantic Ocean, via the Canary Islands, to offer Caribbean and Central America cruises.
