Construction of an airport in Farafra, an oasis in the west of the country
Egypt is sparing no effort to expand its airport network. The North African country wants to open up all geographical areas of high tourist interest in a sustainable manner
An airport will soon be built in Farafra in the west of Egypt. The government, meeting in the Council of Ministers, recently approved the allocation of land to the airport operator, Egyptian Airports Company, for the construction of the said infrastructure. A total area of 23,894.44 acres will be used for the construction of the airport.
Farafra is the least populated of the five major oases in the Libyan desert in Egypt. Located 627 kilometres from Cairo and already served by a paved road, it is an ideal starting point for tourists to explore the main attractions of Egypt's western desert, such as the White Desert, the Black Desert and the Crystal Mountains.
This agricultural oasis also lives from the cultivation of dates, olives and apricots. It is expected that the construction of an airport hub will help boost local tourism, in addition to providing jobs for the nearly 15,000 inhabitants.
