Niamey Int'l airport inaugurates its extended runway
Since May 2019, SUMMA Airports has been operating Niamey's Diori Hamani International Airport, with the mission of establishing it as one of the best airport platforms in the region. Since then, the Turkish company has multiplied investments to equip it with new infrastructures that meet the best standards in the field.
The landing and take-off runway at Niamey's Diori Hamani International Airport is now 3,800 metres long, compared to 3,000 metres previously. The extended platform was inaugurated on Thursday 28 July 2022, in the presence of several Ministers of Transport and Directors General of Civil Aviation of the member countries of the Agency for the Safety of Navigation in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA), present in the Nigerien capital for the work of its Board of Directors.
This extension is the latest achievement of SUMMA, which manages the airport under a 30-year concession. The Turkish company had already equipped the infrastructure with a new state-of-the-art terminal, built a new taxiway, a new cargo terminal, refurbished the presidential pavilion, and carried out other related works. All this for an investment of more than FCFA 100 billion (USD 173 million).
All of these previous developments have enabled Niger's largest airport to obtain aerodrome certification in December 2021, thereby ensuring its compliance with the international specifications of Annex 14 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and with Part 14 (Volume 1) of the Niger Civil Aviation Technical Regulations, concerning facilities and technical operations. The next challenge for the operator will be to obtain several other certifications including ISO 9001:2015 (quality management) and Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA).
