Rehabilitation of Railway Line from Victoria Falls to Chingola
The project to rehabilitate approximately 1029 km of railway track, from the border with Zimbabwe in the south (Livingstone) to the border with DCR (Dem. Rep. of Congo) (Chingola) in the north, is being implemented in two phases. The project involves the rehabilitation of the track superstructure, as well as, the installations of telecommunication and signalling systems, in addition to the procurement of rolling stock and other equipment to increase the carrying capacity of Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL).
The project will allow the Zambian railway operator, ZRL to increase its carrying capacity and traffic speed on the line (50 km/h and 80 km/k variable) in order to handle increased traffic demands on the railroads. This will transform Zambia into a transnational hub in the “SADC” region (Southern African Development Community) with better regional integration through improved railway infrastructure.
The key stakeholders of the project include the IDC and ZRL as the employer, and the TSR Consortium, which consist of Yapı Merkezi and Yapıray, as the main contractor. The contract was signed on 5 March 2021, the duration of Phase-1 Work is 6 months after commencement date and duration of Phase-2 Works is 48 months after the commencement date. Phase 1 works is planned to be completed by the end of 2022.
Zambia’s modernized freight rail network will play a fundamental role in supporting economic growth and ensuring a high quality of life for millions. Yapı Merkezi and Yapıray will be a key player in the project with an established and proven track record of 52 efficient working systems in 3 continents, safely serving over 3 million passengers and 600 million ton-km freight hauled daily.
