Nigeria approves air agreement with Kuwait
Official diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Kuwait date back to 1971. Over the years, the African giant and the Persian Gulf Arab country continue to grow closer through several areas of cooperation, including aviation.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) of Nigeria has approved the signing of a bilateral air services agreement (BASA) with Kuwait. The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 7, by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, at a press briefing after the meeting chaired by the Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari.
"This agreement will open up opportunities for air transport between the two countries in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) convention of December 7, 1944, to which both countries are signatories," the minister said. Currently, there are no direct air links between the two countries.
It is also expected that this air agreement between the two countries will help boost their economic exchanges, which reached nearly 155 million dollars in 2020. Kuwait mainly exports cars to Nigeria and in return imports petroleum products from the West African country.
Nigeria officially opened its embassy in Kuwait in December 1980. Kuwait followed suit years later in May 2005.
