Namibia completes runway rehabilitation at Katima Mulilo airport in the northeast Namibia completes runway rehabilitation at Katima Mulilo airport in the northeast

Katima Mulilo Airport is one of the hubs serving the Caprivi Strip, the main popular destination in northeast Namibia, bordering Zimbabwe.

Katima Mulilo Airport's runway gets a facelift. The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) announced this Tuesday, November 1, 2022, the end of the rehabilitation work of the platform. The construction site officially launched on June 9, is delivered on time, six months. The project, which cost 96 million Namibian dollars (6.44 million USD) and was entirely financed by the government, aims to improve the landing and take-off of planes at the airport located in the North-East of Namibia.

"This work will enable the NAC to fulfill its duty to ensure the safe and secure movement of aircraft at the airfield. While the project will be managed directly by the Ministry of Works and Transport, NAC is committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the end product of the works meets national and international civil aviation regulations and standards," NAC Board Chairman Dr. Leake Hangala said at the launch.
Eventually, it is also planned to upgrade the terminal building and other related infrastructure.

Until that happens, the rehabilitation of the project has been delayed. Indeed, the tender for the execution of the work was approved on September 10, 2013. Due to the poor state of maintenance of the airport over the years, the specifications were subsequently amended, and the latest amendments were approved by the Namibian Tender Board on February 13, 2014.
