Ghana: Sunyani Airport Phase II Rehabilitation to Begin in 2023
Inaugurated in 1974, Sunyani airport in Central Ghana is one of the oldest in the country. This hub, recently reopened after 6 years of work (phase I), plays an essential role in opening up this agricultural part of the country.
Phase II of the rehabilitation of Sunyani airport, in the centre of the country, should begin in 2023. This is what the Ghanaian Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, said on Thursday 24 November 2022, during the presentation to Parliament of the 2023 Finance Bill, reports AviationGhana. The work will involve a new runway extension and the expansion and remodelling of the passenger terminal, the government member said.
The infrastructure was reopened on August 3, after more than six years of closure (since March 2016). This reopening came after the completion of phase I of the renovation project, which cost USD 8.4 million. The project involved the extension of the runway (from 1,280 to 1,400 metres, with a width of 45 metres); the repair of the apron, to accommodate small and medium-sized aircraft; the renovation of the terminal building; and the construction of some internal roads at the airport.
Since then, the hub has been served by PassionAir, which connects it to Accra. In November, the local private carrier increased its weekly flights from 5 to 6.
Also before the people's representatives, the Minister of Finance also revealed that Phase II of the Kumasi Airport Expansion Project has been completed, and that Phase III is 89.33% complete. However, no update was given on the status of Phase II of the Tamale Airport refurbishment project, which was 95% complete as at August. Mr Ofori-Atta revealed that feasibility studies are underway for the construction of an airport to serve the Central and Western regions.
