The Malawi International Tourism Expo (MITE) has been hailed as a resounding success by the Ministry of Tourism. The two-day event, which featured the theme "Takulandirani," brought together industry professionals, local suppliers, and experts to conduct business at the Bingu Wa International Convention Centre in Lilongwe. President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera was present at the official closing ceremony of the MITE and emphasized his government's commitment to the tourism industry, which is a central component of Malawi's ATM Strategy for boosting the productivity of the economy. The President directed the Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, to identify obstacles and tourism assets to create a thriving tourism sector.

The MITE exceeded expectations despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with 115 exhibitors participating in the event instead of the planned 70. Zimbabwe and Tanzania were also represented. Minister Kamtukule expressed appreciation for the support of the industry and praised the resilience of the people of Malawi. She believes that the networking sessions between international buyers and local tourism service providers will result in business partnerships that will lead to Malawi tourism products being sold in international markets from September 2023.

The expo also featured pre- and post-tours for visitors to experience Malawi's tourism attractions firsthand. The event attracted 51 international buyers and media from various countries, including the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ghana, and Nigeria. The Malawi Vision 2063 plan provides hope for the country's future, and collaboration with the tourism ecosystem will help bring it to fruition.
