Connecting West Africa: Major Railway Projects Set To Transform Regional Transport
With the recent call for consultants to explore the mobilisation of financial resources necessary for the implementation of the Union’s railway projects within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) region, two key projects are poised to make significant strides forward.
Particular emphasis will be placed on, yet not limited to, the following railway corridors:
The Abidjan-Ouagadougou-Niamey-Cotonou-Lomé Railway Loop: Spanning 2,928 km, this ambitious project connects the capitals of five nations: Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, Niamey in Niger, Cotonou in Benin, and Lomé in Togo. It is noteworthy that this project is included in the NEPAD PIDA PAP2 Project-Prospectus, highlighting its significance. Premium subscribers follow link. The Dakar-Bamako-Ouangolodougou Railway Line: This line is designed to improve connectivity between Senegal, Mali, and Ivory Coast, enhancing the transport link and fostering economic activities between these countries.
Furthermore, an expression of interest has been issued to undertake a comprehensive study on the harmonisation and interoperability of operating systems of railway lines within the UEMOA region. The primary aim of this study is to facilitate the smooth circulation of trains from all member states across the UEMOA railway corridors, ensuring efficient and seamless transport links throughout the region.
