Xejet Aircraft: NSIB launches investigation into runway overrun? Xejet Aircraft: NSIB launches investigation into runway overrun?

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a full investigation into the runway overrun incident involving a XeJet Airline Embraer 145 aircraft that occurred on Saturday, May 11th, 2024. According to a statement by the Bureau, the incident took place at approximately 1:00 pm at the domestic wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N BZZ, was operating a scheduled flight from Abuja to Lagos on behalf of NG Eagle Airlines and had 49 passengers and 3 crew members on board. The NSIB revealed that, after a holding pattern due to weather, the aircraft landed on Runway 18 Left but veered off the end of the runway and came to a stop on the grass verge.

Thankfully, there were no injuries or fatalities reported, however, the aircraft sustained damage to its landing gear and tires. The NSIB says, it has already interviewed the flight crew and conducted toxicology tests, which came back negative.

The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder for further analysis have also been retrieved.

The investigation, the NSIB explained, will involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

The goal is to gather all necessary information to determine the cause of the incident and identify any safety concerns.

This investigation aims to prevent similar occurrences in the future by issuing safety recommendations as the NSIB assured that, it will provide updates as the investigation progresses.

Meanwhile,  the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, says,  the runway of incident has since been reopened to flight operations.
