Nigeria’s Airports get a security boost
The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has inaugurated 120 officers of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) Special Force, trained to bear arms, as part of her mission to bolster security across airports in the country.
The ceremony, held at the international wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos, marked a significant milestone in the agency’s efforts to bring Nigeria’s aviation security team in line with global standards. Mrs. Kuku emphasized that the trained officers will play a crucial role in securing assets, lives, and people within the aviation environment, particularly at airports.
“This is a remarkable moment for us as we take constructive steps to enhance security. These officers are professional, and they will continue to engage and work closely with other security agencies.” The FAAN MD allayed fears that the security team might deploy their arms for excessive force, cautioning passengers and airport users to conduct their business in an orderly manner.
She reiterated that the arms carried by the officers signify their elite status, which will complement the existing aviation security staff. Mrs. Kuku highlighted the importance of deterrence, stating that the agency hopes to prevent the need for force.
“In the event that they need to use force, they will coordinate with other security agencies. Our focus is on executing our desires, specifically around preventing illegal activities.”
The trained officers will be deployed at five international airports, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu. Mrs. Kuku emphasized the importance of collaboration with sister security agencies at the airports, stating that the agency is working closely with leaders of every security agency.
The next phase of the initiative will focus on coordination, with campaigns launched to promote a culture of zero tolerance for corruption at airports.
In a separate incident, Mrs. Kuku said, a middle-aged man who attempted to steal electrical cables and equipment from the powerhouse of FAAN was electrocuted.
Investigations revealed that the man had gained access to the power generating building and begun disconnecting installations that supply power to the Lagos airport before meeting his demise.
