Tajudeen hails Mabushi Bus Terminal as solution to rapid growth of Abuja
In a bid to address the rapid expansion of Abuja’s population, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has emphasized the need for modern infrastructure to support the city’s growth.
At the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mabushi Bus Terminal, Tajudeen praised the project as a significant step towards enhancing the Federal Capital Territory’s infrastructure and economic mobility.
“The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is strategically important as the capital city of Nigeria, and we must equip it with modern infrastructure to support its key role. This includes developing robust road networks, fostering economic mobility, and providing essential social infrastructure and amenities,” Tajudeen said.
With a population growth rate of over 3% annually, Abuja’s infrastructure is under increasing pressure. The Mabushi Bus Terminal project, valued at over N1 billion, aims to provide a modern transportation hub, complete with state-of-the-art facilities and security features.
Tajudeen commended the leadership and vision of FCT Minister Barr Nyesom Wike, who has driven infrastructural developments in Abuja. He highlighted Wike’s holistic approach that has extended development beyond the city’s nucleus, promoting balanced growth and equitable development in Area Councils.
He also recommended integrating advanced technology and expanding public-private partnerships to sustain Abuja’s development momentum, expressing confidence in the future achievements under Wike’s leadership.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike lamented the absence of essential infrastructure in Abuja, hindering its development into a world-class city. He cited the lack of bus and taxi terminals, contributing to insecurity issues like “one-chance” robberies.
Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the ministry proposed three bus terminals to enhance security and comfort. However, the Central Business District location faces challenges due to distortions in the Abuja Master Plan and land allocation to private individuals.
Wike emphasized that leadership involves making tough decisions, and the ministry will prioritize the Mabushi terminal while resolving issues with the Central Business District location.
He encouraged local contractors to focus on delivering quality work, acknowledging President’s efforts to restore confidence in local contractors.
In her vote of thanks, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, remarked, “This project marks a significant step towards enhancing transportation infrastructure within our city. We are deeply thankful to the visionary leadership of our boss, the Honourable Minister of FCT, His Excellency Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his unwavering commitment to change the landscape of our nation’s capital city.”
She concluded with optimism, “Let us look forward with optimism as we embark on this journey towards a more connected and efficient Abuja. It is my candid hope that we will build not just terminals, but pathways to progress and prosperity.”
The Mandate Secretary of the Transportation Secretariat, Mr. Chinedum Elechi, added, “This bus terminal will serve as a transportation hub where multiple bus routes converge, facilitating the transfer of passengers from one route to another, improving accessibility and mobility within the city.” He noted that the terminal will also stimulate the local economy, create employment opportunities, and provide a safe and secure environment for passengers and staff.
“This bus terminal is a testament to the Hon. Minister’s vision to develop an efficient public transportation system in Abuja, reducing traffic congestion and making the city more attractive to tourists,” Elechi stated. “An efficient public transportation system can significantly reduce traffic congestion, leading to faster travel times, less stress for commuters, and lower costs related to vehicle wear and fuel consumption.”
Expressing gratitude, Elechi concluded, “We thank the Hon. Minister for allowing us to be of service here today. This bus terminal is a testament to his commitment to transforming Abuja into a modern and efficient city.”
