Revitalization of Chipata-Mchinji rail line set to boost trade and transportation
Train operations on the Nacala Corridor, a vital trade route for Zambia, were previously suspended in 2016 due to washaways in Malawi. This crucial corridor spans 1,150km from Chipata to the Port of Nacala, with the Zambian portion covering 24km from Chipata to Mchinji. The resumption of train operations on this corridor is of significant interest to Zambia's economic development, facilitating smoother and more efficient trade routes.
The Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) Board of Directors, under the leadership of Board Chairperson Emmanuel Hachipuka, recently conducted a comprehensive familiarisation tour of the Chipata-Mchinji railway line. During a courtesy call on the Provincial Administration, Mr. Hachipuka reiterated the Board and Government’s strong commitment to resuming train operations on the Nacala Corridor, contingent upon the resolution of current challenges. This initiative aligns with Zambia’s broader economic strategy to enhance trade logistics and infrastructure.
The Board’s physical inspection aimed to meticulously assess the current state of the rail line and explore strategic measures to advance the project. Mr. Hachipuka underscored the necessity for funding, suggesting that the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) could potentially source funds or consider a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to rejuvenate the rail line. He emphasized that the operational efficiency of the Zambian rail line is directly linked to the functionality of the Malawian section, necessitating a holistic and coordinated approach.
Furthermore, Mr. Hachipuka highlighted the keen interest of President Hakainde Hichilema and his government in developing this rail line, alongside other significant projects such as the Lobito Corridor. The Board has developed a Strategic Business Plan (SBP) to steer ZRL’s operations over the next five years, focusing on cost-saving measures and strategic reinvestments. This plan is designed to optimize the rail sector's contribution to Zambia's economy, ensuring sustainable growth and development.
Eastern Province Health Director Dr. Matthews Ng’ambi, representing the Provincial Permanent Secretary, acknowledged the pivotal role of the rail sector in transporting heavy and bulk cargo. He noted that an efficient rail system helps decongest roads, thereby reducing accidents and improving overall road safety. The resumption of train services on the Nacala Corridor would significantly enhance the region's logistics capabilities, boosting trade and economic activities.
In summary, the Nacala Corridor is a critical trade route for Zambia, extending 1,150km from Chipata to the Port of Nacala, with 24km within Zambian territory from Chipata to Mchinji. The Board of Zambia Railways Limited, led by Emmanuel Hachipuka, is diligently working to address existing challenges and secure funding to resume operations. This endeavor, supported by President Hakainde Hichilema's administration, is integral to Zambia’s economic strategy, promoting efficient trade logistics and infrastructure development. The successful revitalization of this rail line holds the promise of substantial economic benefits, underscoring the importance of a coordinated and well-funded approach.
