Moroccan high speed line extension Moroccan high speed line extension

The National Railway Office of Morocco (ONCF) has engaged a Franco-Moroccan consortium consisting of Egis, Systra, and Novec to provide project management assistance for the development of the high-speed rail line between Kénitra and Marrakech.

This consortium will offer comprehensive support in project management, operations master planning, technical optimization, and overall project integration. The contract, announced on August 1, aims to facilitate the extension of the existing 200 km high-speed line from Tangiers to Kénitra by an additional 430 km, reaching Marrakech by 2029. Additionally, the project includes the quadrupling of 130 km of conventional rail around Casablanca and the development of several new stations.

The Moroccan government has accelerated its plans to expand the high-speed rail network and modernize conventional rail services in key cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech. This initiative is part of the preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The investment aligns with the Rail Morocco 2040 Plan, which aims to enhance the country's transportation infrastructure significantly. The consortium's role is crucial in ensuring the successful execution of this ambitious project. They will oversee various phases, including testing and civil engineering approvals, to ensure the project's timely completion. The high-speed rail extension is expected to stimulate economic development by improving connectivity between major urban centers. The project also aims to provide a high-speed rail link between the capital, Rabat, and other significant cities, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of Morocco's transportation network. In addition to the high-speed rail extension, the project includes modernizing the conventional rail network in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech. This modernization effort will involve upgrading existing infrastructure and introducing new technologies to improve service quality and reliability. The ONCF's collaboration with Egis, Systra, and Novec is a testament to the importance of international partnerships in achieving large-scale infrastructure goals.

Overall, the extension of the high-speed rail line and the modernization of conventional rail services represent a significant step forward for Morocco's transportation sector. These projects are expected to provide long-term benefits, including increased economic activity, improved connectivity, and enhanced travel experiences for passengers. The successful implementation of these initiatives will position Morocco as a leader in high-speed rail development in Africa and contribute to the country's broader economic and social development goals.
