FAAN determines to eliminate illicit activities at Nigerian airports
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has vowed to eliminate all forms of touting activities around the nation’s airports.
A statement by Mrs. Obageli Orah, the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, said that Mr. Henry Agbebire, Co-chair of the Headquarters Taskforce Against Indiscipline and Illicit Activities, restated this commitment on Thursday in Lagos during the display of various inscriptions on screen by the team at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The multi-security agencies taskforce was established by Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of FAAN, a few weeks ago to improve the quality of services rendered to air travellers and discourage all forms of extortions, rent-seeking and others at the nation’s airports.
Agbebire, assured that the committee would deliver on its mandate. He emphasised that Kuku had prioritised exceptional customer experience, and the taskforce was pivotal in achieving this goal for the industry in particular and the country at large.
“Our campaign is designed to provide passengers with an improved experience. Gone are the days of ineffective raids; we now leverage modern technology, including Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and body cams, to ensure a sustained and effective approach,” he said.
The statement hinted further that the taskforce’s efforts also aligned with the directive from Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development to elevate the quality of services at Nigeria’s airports.
According to him, to further enhance passenger engagement, QR codes had been strategically placed throughout the airport, enabling travellers to report any illicit activities directly.
At the MMIA, the campaign’s visibility was evident, particularly in the baggage area of the E-Wing arrival hall, where an electronic screen displayed prominent campaign slogans such as ‘Say No To Airport Touting,’ ‘Say No To Airport Harassment,’ ‘Say No To Indiscipline And Illicit Practices.’
The taskforce also displayed roll-up banners, posters, flyers, and stickers in strategic areas.
Orah pointed out that the taskforce’s ongoing efforts and use of modern technology represented a comprehensive approach to eradicating indiscipline and illicit activities at Nigeria’s airports.
“The campaign promises to intensify until these issues are fully addressed, ensuring a safer and more efficient airport experience for all passengers,” the statement added.
