Project opdate on the Kano to Maradi Railway line Project opdate on the Kano to Maradi Railway line

In a recent project update released by the African Development Bank, it was highlighted that Environmental Resources Management (ERM) and EnvAccord Limited have been selected by the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and its financial partners to conduct an independent Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) assessment for a proposed dual-gauge railway line intended for both passenger and freight transport, stretching from Kano, Nigeria, to Maradi, Niger. This railway project covers an approximate distance of 284 kilometers and aims to enhance the transportation infrastructure linking Nigeria and Niger.

Project Development and Current Status

The development and construction of this significant railway project are being managed by Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construção África (MEECA), a company based in Nigeria. However, it has been reported that certain elements of the Environmental and Social (E& S) studies, particularly those related to resettlement action planning and the approval of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), are still in progress on the Niger side. This delay is primarily due to ongoing border closures that have limited access to the railway alignment. As a result, the current report focuses on the E& S studies conducted for the Nigerian segment of the project, along with a preliminary assessment of the Niger section.

Proposed Branch Line

In addition to the main railway line leading to Maradi, there is a proposed branch line extending from Kano to Dutse, which will cover an additional 102 kilometers. This branch line is expected to serve as a vital connection between Kano, a key commercial center in Nigeria, and Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.

Main Line Details

The primary railway line, which spans 393 kilometers, will link three federal states in Nigeria: Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina. Furthermore, it will connect to the Republic of Niger through Maradi. The branch line will facilitate a connection between Dutse and Kano, enhancing regional connectivity. The route for the railway line begins in Kano, traversing several towns, including Dawanau, Kunya, Dambatta, Kazaure, Durbe, Daura, Shargalle, Mashi, Maduru, Katsina, Daddara, Jibia, and ultimately reaching Maradi in Niger.
