Ethiopian Airlines operated flight overruns runway at Malabo Airport Ethiopian Airlines operated flight overruns runway at Malabo Airport

Equatorial Guinea’s governmental information office, citing a representative of air navigation authority ASECNA at the capital Malabo airport, states that the aircraft encountered low-visibility conditions during its approach.

“As visibility was poor, the pilot asked for the intensity of the lights on the runway to be increased,” says the information office. “Even so, the pilot could not see well enough.”

It adds that the aircraft had descended to a “critical” height, without elaborating on why the landing attempt was not aborted.

“Since the landing had started in the middle of the runway, it was already impossible to brake in time and it ended up off the runway,” the office states.

A Boeing 737-800 aircraft, operated by Ethiopian Airlines for Ceiba Intercontinental, overran the runway upon landing at Malabo International Airport on August 29. The aircraft, registered as ET-AWR, was performing domestic flight CEL205 from Bata to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The aircraft ended up on soft ground after overshooting the runway. Passengers were promptly evacuated from the aircraft, and emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. The extent of the damage to the aircraft is currently unknown.

Footage of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing the aircraft at rest on the soft ground beyond the runway. The video shows passengers evacuating the aircraft, with emergency services rushing to the scene.

The flight, #CEL205, had originated from Bata and was scheduled to land in Malabo. The Boeing 737-800, built in 2014, is leased from Ethiopian Airlines by Ceiba Intercontinental, a national airline of Equatorial Guinea.
