TAZARA concession on it's way TAZARA concession on it's way

China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), a renowned global player in the field of civil engineering, is currently engaged in dynamic discussions to secure a 30-year concession to manage the operations of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway network. The objective of this ambitious project is to breathe new life into the existing infrastructure and rolling stock, thereby enhancing the efficiency and productivity of the railway network.

The CCECC is no stranger to this railway line, having been the primary builder of the Chinese-funded line back in the 1970s. This historical connection and the company's extensive experience in civil engineering make it a strong contender for the task at hand. Recently, the CCECC conducted a thorough business and technical evaluation of the network, assessing its current state and identifying areas that require improvement.

A significant milestone in this ongoing negotiation was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation, held in Beijing on September 4. This event was graced by the presence of the heads of state of China, Tanzania, and Zambia, who witnessed the signing of the MoU, symbolizing the commitment of all parties involved to the successful revitalization of the railway network.

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority, the governing body overseeing the railway network, is working diligently to finalize a concession agreement by the end of the current year. The Authority is optimistic that the refurbishment of the infrastructure and rolling stock will be completed within a two-year timeframe. This includes the repair and upgrade of railway tracks, stations, and trains, among other things.

In terms of long-term projections, the Authority anticipates a significant increase in traffic on the railway line. The current traffic of 0.5 million metric tonnes per year is expected to quadruple to approximately 2 million metric tonnes per year. This surge in traffic is a testament to the potential of the railway network to facilitate trade and transportation in the region.

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) expressed its enthusiasm about the transformation of the railway network. It envisions the revitalized railway as a catalyst for regional economic development, aligning with the aspirations of the people of both Tanzania and Zambia. The railway network is not just a means of transportation, but a symbol of progress and prosperity, fostering economic growth and strengthening the bond between the two nations.
