On World Tourism Day 2024, Nigeria’s Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, reaffirmed the country’s dedication to harnessing tourism as a catalyst for peace, understanding, and economic growth. Aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Minister emphasized the pivotal role of tourism in fostering national unity and prosperity.

Speaking at the FCT Arts Pavilion, Mrs. Ade-John highlighted the transformative power of tourism beyond its traditional economic benefits. She noted that tourism serves as a bridge between cultures, promoting mutual respect and understanding. “Tourism is more than an industry; it is a pathway to peace and reconciliation”.

The Minister underscored the immense economic potential of Nigeria’s tourism sector, citing projections from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

According to the WTTC, the sector is expected to create 2.6 million new jobs and contribute ₦12.3 trillion to the economy by 2032. While these figures demonstrate significant economic promise, the Minister emphasized that the true value of tourism lies in its ability to foster unity, break down barriers, and support inclusive growth.

To unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s tourism sector, the Minister outlined several strategic initiatives.

These include the revitalization of the National Tourism Policy and Tourism Development MasterPlan, the reactivation of the Presidential Council on Tourism, and the embrace of digital transformation while the Ministry is also focused on enhancing tourist attractions, promoting community-based tourism, and integrating tourism into the education system.

Mrs. Ade-John stressed the importance of sustainable tourism, which respects local communities and the environment, through promoting eco-friendly travel, Nigeria can protect its natural treasures while fostering a sense of pride and ownership among its citizens.
