2025 new rule: Foreign airlines must use local caterers in Nigeria
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has issued a directive requiring foreign airlines operating out of Nigeria to use local caterers for in-flight meals. The new regulation is set to take effect on January 1, 2025.
The directive was communicated in an official letter addressed to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), signed by Hassan Ejibunu, who oversees the office of the permanent secretary. The letter, dated October 15, 2024, instructs the NCAA to ensure that all outbound flights from Nigeria, particularly those operated by foreign airlines, comply with the mandate.
The ministry emphasized that the move is aimed at boosting local businesses and ensuring that airlines contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s aviation and hospitality industries. “You are hereby directed to convey the decision to all foreign airlines for strict compliance beginning from 1st of January, 2025,” the letter reads.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to localize services in key sectors and reflects a growing focus on promoting domestic economic opportunities within Nigeria.
The NCAA is expected to work closely with airlines to ensure a smooth transition and adherence to the new policy. The directive highlights the government’s commitment to fostering local content in the aviation sector, providing a significant boost to Nigeria’s culinary and service industries as they prepare to cater to international airlines.
