The General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, is set to commence full international operations January 1, 2025, following a one-day working visit by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

During the visit, Keyamo emphasized the importance of the project, describing it as a symbol of growth and resilience for the region.

The airport, which is poised to be the first fully operational international airport in the North East Zone, will feature a world-class runway and state-of-the-art facilities, making it a regional cargo hub.

The airport’s upgrade is expected to enhance connectivity for the North East Zone and strengthen Maiduguri’s role in international air travel and cargo transportation. The project is also expected to offer critical support to the economy of the North East and beyond.

Keyamo met with Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, during the visit, and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to collaborating with the state government to ensure the successful launch of operations on the planned date.

The Minister was accompanied by Chief Executives from key aviation agencies, including the managing director of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Farouk Umar, the DG of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, represented by Engr. Balang, and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
