NCAA Recertification: Abuja, Lagos Airports Get Clean Bill of Health
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has achieved a major milestone with the recertification of its international airports in Lagos and Abuja by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA.
The Acting Director-General, Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo at a brief ceremony held at NCAA Headquarters in Abuja handed over both certificates to the Managing Director of FAAN Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku. Capt. Najomo said the recertification of the aerodromes after meeting stringent conditions is a significant milestone in aviation safety and security.
The recertification process, which was anchored in the principles established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), involved rigorous assessments of airport facilities, including runway conditions and airfield lighting systems, to ensure compliance with global standards.
Mrs. Kuku acknowledged the relentless efforts of airport managers and their teams, saying, “Your commitment to excellence has brought us to this pivotal point in our journey toward ensuring that our airports meet the highest international standards.” She also extended her heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, for their unwavering support throughout the process.
The recertification is a significant achievement, as FAAN’s Aerodrome certificates had not been active since 2020. Kuku noted that, the accomplishment is a vital step in enhancing the country’s aviation infrastructure, which has long been overdue.
She also used the occasion to highlight the ongoing assessments and improvements regarding the two primary runways in Lagos 18R and the taxiways A, B, and C, which are crucial for the smooth movement of aircraft on the ground.
In Abuja, the primary runway also requires continued attention to ensure it meets ICAO standards.
