Major Refurbishment Planned for Muizenberg Beachfront Starting February 2025
The City of Cape Town has announced that the revitalization of the Muizenberg beachfront will begin in mid-February 2025. This extensive project aims to significantly enhance public facilities and replace the aging seawalls, with an expected completion date by the end of 2026. The upgrade will occur in phases, focusing on Surfer’s Corner along the western section of the beachfront on Beach Road. Key areas included in the refurbishment are the connection to the St James walkway, the Surfer’s Corner steps, the main promenade, and the existing informal gravel parking area adjacent to the railway line and eastern parking lot. The initial phase of construction will start along the western part of Surfer’s Corner, near the railway line. Importantly, the beach will remain open and accessible to the public throughout the duration of the project. The planned enhancements for the Muizenberg beachfront will include:
- A new stepped revetment for coastal protection
- Installation of clay pavers in the parking area along the railway line
- New ablution facilities
- A modern pergola
- An upgraded playground
- Relocation of all eight beach huts
Situated along the False Bay coastline, Muizenberg is located approximately 25 km from Cape Town's city center. It is part of the southern suburbs and is easily reachable by road or train. Renowned for its expansive sandy beach and gentle waves, Muizenberg is a favored destination for both locals and tourists.
