The eThekwini Municipality, which oversees the governance and management of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, has recently published updated information regarding the status of local beaches and swimming pools as of December 10, 2024. This announcement includes lists of beaches that are currently safe for swimming, those that are closed for swimming, and the swimming pools that are accessible to the public. According to the latest updates, 21 beaches in Durban are open for swimming, providing locals and tourists with great opportunities to enjoy the beautiful coastline. However, swimming is prohibited at two beaches due to concerns over water quality. In addition, 33 public swimming pools in Durban are currently open, offering alternative recreational options for those looking to cool off. The following beaches are open for swimming, with operating hours from 06:00 to 18:30:

  • Point Beach
  • North Beach
  • South Beach
  • Wedge Beach
  • Thekwini Beach
  • Laguna Beach
  • Country Club
  • mDloti Main

  • Westbrook
  • uMgababa
  • Brighton
  • Winkelespruit
  • Toti Main Beach
  • Pipeline Beach
  • Warner Beach

Currently, the beaches that are closed for swimming include:

  • Anstey's Beach
  • Reunion Beach

While swimming is not permitted at these closed beaches, the eThekwini Municipality encourages visitors to engage in other recreational activities in these areas. This initiative aims to ensure that beachgoers still have the opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty and various amenities available along the coastline. As always, safety and water quality remain a top priority for the municipality, and they continue to monitor conditions to ensure that Durban's beaches are safe for public use.
