Yonas Yilema, the Heritage Research Lead Executive at the Ethiopian Heritage Authority (EHA), shared insights with the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) regarding the critical role that restoring heritage sites plays in cultural preservation, economic development, and tourism. He pointed out that numerous heritage locations in Ethiopia have remained hidden from public view for centuries but are now being unveiled to harness economic advantages.
"Heritage sites possess tremendous cultural, historical, and educational significance. Many of these sites require restoration to ensure their preservation and to effectively pass them on to future generations," Yonas explained.
Among the notable restoration projects currently underway are the iconic Gondar Castle and the renowned Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela. Additionally, the anticipated opening of the Jubilee Palace Museum is generating excitement within the tourism sector. Furthermore, the Jima Aba Jifar Palace has recently undergone complete renovation and is now welcoming visitors.

Melakselam Kesis Dawit Yared, the Head of the Heritage and Library Tourism Department of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, stressed the significance of maintaining UNESCO-registered heritage sites to present the nation’s rich civilization to the world. He advocated for enhanced cooperation in restoration efforts, emphasizing the need for both financial support and intellectual collaboration.
Habtamu Abriha, the Lead Executive for Heritage Conservation and Development at EHA, affirmed that the reopening of the Jubilee Palace Museum is vital for attracting tourists, stimulating economic growth, and creating employment opportunities.
