Enhancing Trade in Central Africa: Key Upgrades to the Douala-N’Djamena Corridor

The African Development Bank has unveiled its appraisal report for the Transport Sector Support Program Phase IV, aimed at revitalizing the critical Ngaoundéré-Garoua segment of the Douala-N’Djamena Economic Corridor.

This strategic initiative is designed to bolster trade connectivity between the port of Douala in Cameroon and Chad, a landlocked nation that relies heavily on this corridor for maritime access. The Douala-N’Djamena corridor plays a vital role not only for Chad but also for the Far North Region of Cameroon, an area that has been grappling with the impacts of climate change and security concerns.

Efficient trade along this route is supported by a combination of rail and road networks; however, the Ngaoundéré-Garoua road, established in the 1990s, has fallen into a state of disrepair. The deteriorating condition of this road segment has led to increased travel times and higher transaction costs, ultimately stifling economic growth and activity in the region. The rehabilitation project aims to restore the road’s functionality, significantly reducing delays and enhancing trade efficiency. The Cameroonian government has recognized the importance of a multimodal approach to transportation development and has invested substantially in various infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, and ports, over the past decade.

Notably, resources have been allocated to maintain the railway line that runs along the Douala-Ngaoundéré corridor. To further support this initiative, the African Development Bank has also funded a UA 4 million feasibility study that explores the potential extension of the railway line from Ngaoundéré to N’Djamena. This expansion is expected to not only ease transport logistics but also foster greater regional integration. The upcoming improvements to the Ngaoundéré-Garoua section are anticipated to yield significant benefits, such as reduced journey times and lower transport costs, further enhancing trade efficiency along both the Douala-N’Djamena and Douala-Bangui corridors.

Additionally, the project is expected to economically empower local communities situated along the route, enhancing their resilience to environmental and economic pressures. This ambitious project highlights Cameroon’s dedication to developing an integrated and efficient transport network, which is essential for fostering regional trade and promoting sustainable economic growth across Central Africa. As these upgrades take shape, they hold the promise of unlocking new opportunities for trade and development in the region, paving the way for a more prosperous future.
