Nigeria has officially expanded its network of protected areas with the elevation of Kampe Games Reserve to National Park status. This significant development, announced during a formal handover ceremony in Ilorin, Kwara State, marks a pivotal moment for conservation  and tourism  in the region. The move is set to unlock new opportunities for travel professionals looking to offer unique and sustainable  experiences to their clients.

The handover, presided over by the Kwara State Governor, was attended by key stakeholders, underscoring the commitment of both state and federal authorities to this initiative. A dedicated steering committee  has been established to ensure a smooth transition and to guide the park’s development. Governor AbdulRazaq highlighted the importance of this step for environmental improvement  and the sustainable management of natural resources, emphasizing its alignment with the Federal Government’s vision for transforming game reserves into thriving national parks.

This upgrade is part of a broader national strategy, as revealed by the Minister of Environment, to elevate ten forest and game reserves across Nigeria to National Park  status. This ambitious plan will bring the total number of national parks in the country to seventeen, significantly boosting Nigeria’s commitment to global biodiversity conservation targets  and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Beyond conservation, this initiative is also seen as a strategic move to enhance internal security  within these vital ecological zones.

For travel agents in Africa, the newly designated Kampe National Park  presents a compelling addition to Nigeria’s tourism offerings. Located in Kwara State, the park promises a rich tapestry of wildlife  and natural landscapes, offering potential for safarisnature walks, and birdwatching tours. The commitment from local communities, expressed by Etsu Patigi, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II, ensures a welcoming environment for visitors and a collaborative approach to sustainable tourism development. Keep an eye on Kwara State – it’s poised to become a vibrant new destination on the African eco-tourism map.
