Overland Airways Expands West African Reach with Flights to Freetown and Banjul
Overland Airways, Nigeria’s leading airline, has taken a major step toward uniting African markets by launching direct flights from Lagos to Freetown, Sierra Leone, and Lagos to Banjul, The Gambia. These new routes, which commenced in December 2024, align with the African Union’s Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) initiative, underscoring the airline’s commitment to promoting seamless connectivity across the continent.
Direct Flights and Efficient Connections
The Lagos to Freetown route launched on December 19, 2024, operates as a direct service departing from Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Meanwhile, the Lagos to Banjul service, inaugurated on December 21, 2024, connects through Freetown, offering the shortest connecting time and fewest stops in the market. Both routes are operated using Overland Airways’ brand-new Embraer E-175 jet aircraft, equipped with dual-class seating and spacious legroom for enhanced comfort.
Commitment to SAATM and Regional Growth
Overland Airways’ expansion is firmly rooted in the SAATM initiative, which aims to liberalize air transport across Africa, creating a single aviation market through the deregulation of air services. This move allows for regional competition and greater connectivity, thereby advancing the continent’s aviation industry.
According to Capt. Edward Boyo, Managing Director of Overland Airways and SAATM Ambassador for West Africa, the launch of these new routes reflects the airline’s dedication to safe, reliable, and convenient air travel. He remarked, “Overland Airways reinforces its position as a leading African carrier, committed to connecting West Africa and supporting the region’s aviation growth.”
Enhanced Fleet and Strategic Growth
The deployment of the Embraer E-175 jets on these routes is a testament to Overland Airways’ modernization strategy, evolving from an all-turboprop fleet to a mixed fleet of advanced jet aircraft. The Embraer jets are designed to offer a premium flying experience, further enhancing the airline’s service standards.
Overland Airways has been steadily expanding its network in line with its strategic growth plan. In August 2024, the airline launched direct flight services between Lagos and Abuja, strengthening domestic connectivity. Additionally, the airline renewed its IOSA certification for the 5th consecutive time in October 2024, reaffirming its reputation as a safety-focused and reliable carrier.
Opportunities for African Travel Agents
For African travel agents, Overland Airways’ new routes provide an exciting opportunity to market shorter and more direct connections across West Africa, particularly for business travelers, tourists, and those visiting friends and family. With the airline’s dual-class service, passengers can enjoy a comfortable and efficient travel experience, making Overland Airways a competitive choice for regional travel.
By connecting Lagos, Freetown, and Banjul, Overland Airways is not only enhancing regional trade and tourism but also supporting the economic integration goals of SAATM. The airline’s planned expansion into West and Central Africa further solidifies its position as a key player in African aviation.
As Overland Airways continues to expand its network and invest in modern fleet upgrades, it sets a strong example for how African carriers can align with continental initiatives like SAATM to unlock the full potential of Africa’s aviation sector. This growing connectivity is vital for fostering economic development, tourism, and regional collaboration, making Overland Airways a vital link in Africa’s aviation future.
