British Airways Expands Airlink Codeshare to Botswana
British Airways (BA), the United Kingdom’s flag carrier, and South African regional airline Airlink have expanded their codeshare agreement to include destinations in Botswana, further enhancing connectivity between Europe, North America, and Southern Africa. The enhanced agreement, which has been gradually implemented since late January 2025, now covers Airlink’s return flights between OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and three key airports in Botswana: Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) in Gaborone, Maun Airport (MUB) in Maun, and Kasane International Airport (BBK) in Kasane.
Starting 01 April 2025, the codeshare will also extend to Airlink’s new route between Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town and Gaborone, providing even more travel options for passengers.
This expanded partnership is a significant step in improving global travel and tourism between Europe and Southern Africa, offering seamless connections for British Airways passengers to Botswana’s popular destinations. These include Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta, and Kasane, a key access point to the Chobe National Park, both of which are major attractions for international tourists.
The codeshare agreement allows passengers to book their entire journey on a single ticket, simplifying travel logistics and ensuring smoother baggage transfers. This is particularly beneficial for corporate and leisure travelers seeking convenient access to Botswana’s cities and natural wonders.
Adapting to Market Needs
The partnership between British Airways and Airlink fills the gap left by the collapse of Comair, which had been a BA franchise partner for 25 years before ceasing operations in 2022. By teaming up with Airlink, British Airways has strengthened its presence in Southern Africa, connecting passengers to over 15 destinations in the region.
For African travel agents, this development presents an excellent opportunity to promote Botswana’s tourism offerings to international travelers. With British Airways’ extensive global network and Airlink’s regional expertise, the codeshare agreement makes it easier for tourists to explore Botswana’s wildlife-rich landscapes and cultural heritage.
A Boost for Botswana’s Tourism and Trade
The enhanced connectivity is expected to support Botswana’s tourism industry, which is a vital contributor to the country’s economy. Additionally, the codeshare agreement strengthens business ties between Botswana and international markets, particularly in Europe and North America.
As British Airways and Airlink deepen their collaboration, travelers can look forward to seamless travel experiences, improved access to Southern Africa’s hidden gems, and greater convenience when exploring Botswana’s world-renowned destinations. This partnership underscores the growing importance of regional connectivity in driving tourism and trade across Africa.
