24-Hour Access to Sedudu-Ngoma Transit Route in Chobe National Park Starting April 2025
The Botswana Ministry of Environment and Tourism has officially confirmed that the Sedudu-Ngoma transit route through Chobe National Park will be open 24 hours a day beginning on April 1, 2025. This significant change was announced by Minister of Environment and Tourism, Boipuso Mmolotsi, who emphasized the importance of ensuring safe and free movement while addressing potential risks associated with this initiative.
Previously, the Sedudu-Ngoma route had restricted operating hours to minimize disturbances to wildlife and combat illegal activities such as poaching. The transition to round-the-clock access aims to enhance mobility for local communities and stimulate economic activities in the region, particularly for those traveling between Kasane and Namibia.
To facilitate this transition, the Ministry will implement several key measures:
- Engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure a collaborative approach.
- Conducting sensitization campaigns and programs for transit users focused on animal behavior, wildlife interactions, and safety protocols.
- Improving road signage and enhancing security through increased day and night patrols.
The Sedudu-Ngoma transit route serves as a vital corridor linking Sedudu Gate near Kasane to Ngoma Gate close to the Botswana-Namibia border. This route is crucial for vehicles traveling between these two points, and its location within a national park necessitates strict regulations to protect wildlife and promote conservation efforts.
With the new 24-hour access, the Ministry aims to balance the needs of local communities and the imperative of wildlife conservation. This initiative is expected to not only improve accessibility but also enhance the overall visitor experience in Chobe National Park, which is renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.
As the opening date approaches, travelers and local residents alike can look forward to the benefits of this enhanced access, which promises to foster greater connectivity and economic growth in the region.
