Enugu Airport Runway Repairs Completed Ahead of Schedule, Boosting Regional Connectivity
The Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) in Enugu, Nigeria, is set to reopen on April 28, 2025, significantly earlier than initially projected. This expedited reopening follows swift and successful emergency repairs to the airport’s runway, addressing a critical rupture in the asphalt surface that necessitated its closure just a week prior. The rapid turnaround underscores the commitment of Nigerian authorities to maintaining vital air travel infrastructure and minimizing disruptions to regional connectivity.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced the reopening, confirming that engineers had completed the necessary repairs and cleared the runway for both landings and takeoffs. The original closure, announced last week, was scheduled to last until May 6, 2025. The efficient execution of these repairs demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between government agencies and engineering teams, ensuring minimal impact on travel schedules and facilitating the smooth resumption of flight operations.
Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection for FAAN, expressed gratitude for the understanding and cooperation of airport users and stakeholders during the brief closure. This recent repair builds upon previous investments in the AIIA’s infrastructure. In 2019, the Federal Government allocated N10 billion for the runway’s rehabilitation and extension, a project awarded to PW Construction Company under the leadership of former Aviation Minister, Sen. Hadi Sirika. This substantial investment reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to modernizing airport facilities and enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.
Prior to this, in 2014, the airport underwent a significant remodelling, including runway upgrades, under the direction of then-Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah. This earlier renovation was part of a broader initiative funded by a \$500 million loan from China, demonstrating the strategic importance of international partnerships in developing critical infrastructure projects.
