Namibia's Hosea Kutako Airport Access Remains Smooth Despite B6 Road Works
Travel agents across Africa can reassure their clients: Access to Namibia’s Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) remains virtually unaffected by the temporary road works currently underway on the B6 route. While a short section near the popular Heja Game Lodge is undergoing improvements, a newly implemented bypass ensures continued smooth transit for travelers.
The Namibian Roads Authority (RA) initiated the project on May 28, 2025, focusing on a 700-meter stretch of the B6 where it intersects with District Road 1527 (DR1527). This area, approximately 13 kilometers from Windhoek and close to Heja Game Lodge, is a key transit point for airport transfers. The RA has confirmed that despite the diversion, travel times to and from the airport are expected to remain largely consistent.
Heja Game Lodge, a prominent landmark on the route, continues to offer its usual range of services. Known for its tranquil setting and diverse wildlife, the lodge provides accommodation in 20 rooms and six self-catering chalets, complete with amenities such as air conditioning and on-site dining. Guests can enjoy activities like game drives, horse riding, and relaxing by the pool overlooking the dam. Its convenient location makes it a popular stopover for travelers, particularly those arriving or departing from Hosea Kutako International Airport.
The ongoing road works have minimal impact on access to nearby attractions. Sites such as the Otjihase Mine, Hoffnung Dam, Eastside Baptist Church, Ludwigsdorf Water Reservoir, and the Quba Mosque all remain accessible, offering diverse experiences for visitors. The scenic drive to these locations might be slightly altered due to the temporary bypass, but the overall visitor experience is expected to remain positive.
Hosea Kutako International Airport, Namibia’s primary international gateway, plays a vital role in the country’s tourism sector. The airport has seen a resurgence in passenger numbers, with March 2024 recording 36,173 arrivals, a significant increase compared to the previous year. In January 2025, the airport handled 76.4% of Namibia’s total passenger movements, further solidifying its position as a key entry point for international travelers.
The airport serves as a hub for various international and regional routes, connecting Windhoek to major global destinations. Airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines and Lufthansa operate from HKIA, facilitating travel and trade. The airport’s strategic partnerships, including a sister airport agreement with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, aim to enhance economic and cultural exchange.
Travel agents can confidently include Hosea Kutako International Airport in their itineraries, knowing that access remains efficient despite the temporary road works. The 700-meter construction zone represents only a small fraction of the total 45-kilometer route, and the bypass adds a negligible 300 meters to the journey. Estimated travel times, even during peak hours, are expected to increase by less than a minute, ensuring minimal disruption for travelers.
The Namibian Roads Authority’s proactive approach in implementing the bypass minimizes the impact on both travelers and the tourism sector. By maintaining smooth access to the airport and nearby attractions, Namibia continues to welcome visitors with seamless travel experiences. Travel agents are encouraged to stay updated on the progress of the road works through official channels, ensuring they can provide the most accurate information to their clients.
