Tanzania Introduces Mandatory Travel Insurance for International Visitors

Tanzania is set to introduce mandatory travel insurance for all foreign visitors, marking a significant shift in the country’s tourism landscape. This new policy, effective upon gazetting of related regulations, aims to enhance visitor safety and streamline health coverage while contributing to the nation’s revenue.

Under the new regulations, international travelers to mainland Tanzania will be required to purchase inbound travel insurance at a premium of US\$44 (approximately TZS 116,000). The insurance will cover medical emergencies, loss of luggage, and emergency medical evacuation or repatriation, providing essential protection for visitors.

This initiative mirrors a similar policy already in place in Zanzibar, where a comparable insurance requirement was introduced in October 2024. The mainland policy, proposed by Finance Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba during the 2025/26 budget presentation, will be valid for up to 92 days per visitor.

Citizens of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will be exempt from the mandatory insurance requirement. This exemption acknowledges existing regional agreements and facilitates seamless travel within these blocs.

The insurance scheme will operate through a public-private partnership, with the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) representing the government's interests. Private insurers will also participate, sharing revenue and contributing to the scheme's efficient management and service delivery.
