Makgadikgadi Epic Cancelled: Agent Advisory for 2025 Alternatives Makgadikgadi Epic Cancelled: Agent Advisory for 2025 Alternatives

The Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Makgadikgadi Epic, citing budgetary constraints and logistical challenges. This news comes as a disappointment to many in the African travel trade who relied on the event to draw adventure tourists to Botswana.

The annual skydiving and adventure tourism spectacle, typically held in Sowa Town against the backdrop of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, was scheduled for July 18–20. In a press release, the BTO expressed regret, emphasizing the difficulty of the decision, which followed extensive efforts to secure necessary funding.

The BTO acknowledged the impact on partners, sponsors, and enthusiasts, assuring them that planning is already underway for a “bigger and better” Makgadikgadi Epic in 2026. Those who pre-paid for skydiving or tandem jumps are advised to contact the BTO for refunds or to transfer payments to the 2026 event.

This cancellation presents a challenge for African travel agents who had incorporated the Makgadikgadi Epic into their 2025 itineraries. However, it also opens up opportunities to explore alternative adventure tourism offerings in Botswana and neighboring countries.

Botswana itself offers several exciting alternatives for adventure-seeking clients. The Khawa Dune Challenge & Cultural Festival (June 27–29) combines quad and motorbike challenges with vibrant cultural performances. For endurance enthusiasts, the Salt Pans Ultra Marathon (September 27) offers a grueling 100km race across the otherworldly landscape of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Year-round safari and adventure tours, including walking safaris, mokoro excursions, and helicopter tours, provide further options for adventurous travelers.

Neighboring countries also offer a wealth of adventure experiences. In Zimbabwe, the Victoria Falls Marathon (July 2025) and the Victoria Falls Carnival (April 2025) provide thrilling and culturally rich experiences. Adventure safaris, whitewater rafting, and bungee jumping are available year-round. South Africa hosts Expedition Africa, a challenging 250km adventure race, and the Drakensberg Adventure Conference, which combines professional development with adventure activities. Namibia offers stunning desert safaris and unique wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly in 2025 due to unusual heavy rains. Zambia will host the Mosi Oa Tunya Rally, a major motorbike event, and the Zambia Travel Expo (ZATEX), focusing on sustainable and adventure tourism.

The cancellation of the Makgadikgadi Epic, while disappointing, presents an opportunity for African travel agents to showcase their creativity and adaptability. By exploring these alternative offerings and crafting bespoke itineraries that combine adventure with cultural experiences, agents can still deliver exceptional journeys for their clients in 2025.

The economic impact of the Makgadikgadi Epic’s cancellation is significant for local businesses in the Sowa area, who will lose out on the revenue generated by the influx of visitors. However, by redirecting tourists to alternative events and activities, agents can help mitigate this impact and support local communities.

The BTO’s commitment to a “bigger and better” Makgadikgadi Epic in 2026 signals the event’s long-term importance to Botswana’s tourism strategy. Agents should stay informed about developments for the 2026 event and incorporate it into their future planning.

This situation underscores the importance of diversification in tourism offerings. By promoting a wider range of adventure and cultural experiences, African travel agents can create more resilient itineraries and cater to a broader range of client interests. This adaptability is crucial in a dynamic tourism landscape.

The Makgadikgadi Epic’s cancellation, while unfortunate, presents a chance for African travel agents to demonstrate their resourcefulness and expertise. By embracing alternative offerings and crafting unique travel experiences, agents can continue to thrive and contribute to the growth of adventure tourism in Africa.
