Turkish Airlines Doubles Down on Boeing with Major Dreamliner and 737 MAX Orders
Turkish Airlines is set to embark on an ambitious phase of fleet expansion and modernisation, having finalised a landmark agreement to acquire a significant number of new Boeing aircraft. The deal encompasses 35 Boeing 787-9s, 15 of the larger 787-10s, and options for an additional 25 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The airline has also revealed its intent to purchase up to 150 more 737 MAX aircraft, which will constitute its largest-ever single-aisle order with Boeing once finalised. Together, these commitments will effectively double Turkish Airlines’ current Boeing fleet as the airline targets new heights in both capacity and international connectivity.
This sweeping order is far more than a simple fleet expansion. For Turkish Airlines, it marks a strategic move to reinforce its position as a leader in the global aviation industry and to further cement its role as a connector between continents. Prof. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, stated, “This landmark agreement represents much more than a fleet growth. It is a reflection of our leadership in the industry as well as our dedication to innovation and operational excellence.” With these advanced aircraft, Turkish Airlines is laying the foundation for its 2033 Vision—a plan to grow its fleet to 800 aircraft and expand its footprint across the world.
Currently, Turkish Airlines operates a diverse fleet of over 200 Boeing jets, including the 787-9, 777, 737 MAX, Next-Generation 737, and 777 Freighter models. The addition of both the 787-9 and the larger 787-10 will provide the carrier with enhanced operational flexibility, particularly on high-demand routes connecting Istanbul with key destinations in the U.S., Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. The larger 787-10 brings increased passenger and cargo capacity while maintaining superior fuel efficiency, making it a critical asset for routes poised for growth.
For Africa’s travel sector, these fleet investments are highly significant. Turkish Airlines already serves more African cities than nearly any other international carrier, and the anticipated arrival of new widebody and single-aisle jets is set to boost frequency, reliability, and choice for African travellers and trade partners. As Turkish Airlines extends its reach, African travel professionals can expect improved access to Istanbul’s expansive hub and onward global connections—including enhanced long-haul comfort and greater cargo capacity for the continent’s growing export markets.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner family, with over 1,200 aircraft delivered worldwide, is now a cornerstone of long-haul operations for leading international airlines. Its appeal lies in its passenger comfort features—notably, the largest windows of any widebody aircraft, improved cabin air quality with lower altitude pressurization, and advanced turbulence-sensing technology for a smoother ride. These innovations are central to Turkish Airlines’ customer experience strategy as it competes for premium and leisure passengers on intercontinental routes.
Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, commented, “We are honored that Turkish Airlines has once again chosen the 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX to power its future growth.” The 737 MAX order, in particular, strengthens Turkish Airlines’ position in the competitive single-aisle market, supporting route expansion across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa while offering greater fuel efficiency and operational flexibility.
Beyond passenger service, the expanded fleet will also enhance Turkish Airlines’ cargo operations—a key consideration for African markets increasingly engaged in global trade. The combination of larger capacity jets and next-generation single-aisle aircraft enables the airline to optimise its cargo network, supporting Africa’s perishable exports, manufacturing sectors, and e-commerce logistics.
With a network that currently reaches more countries than any other airline, Turkish Airlines is uniquely positioned to leverage these new aircraft for further growth. The strategic investment in its Boeing fleet not only supports thousands of jobs across the aviation supply chain but also sets a new benchmark for operational excellence and connectivity worldwide.
For African travel professionals and businesses, Turkish Airlines’ renewed commitment to fleet modernisation means enhanced access, more competitive fares, and the prospect of new destinations. As the airline moves forward with its 2033 Vision, African markets will play an increasingly central role in its global strategy—opening doors for tourism, trade, and pan-continental partnership opportunities in the years ahead.
